Future Amateur Boxer (Part 1)

This young man is Felix Gaudreau of St. Adele, QC. I met Felix and his dad Sylvain sometime during the winter at an amateur boxing show in St. Adele. Felix started riding motocross in July of 2003 and competed in 6 pro-am's out of 8, managing to finish 15th out of 25. Since then Felix has raced 50cc, and 65cc. In the 50cc class he managed to finish 6th overall in the Provincial Championships. In the 65cc Felix finished 8th overall. December 4th Felix traveled to the Skydome in Toronto for the Super motocross Challenge 2005. Felix performed well and finished 4th with 1 fall. The race will be televised on the American ESPN 2 Channel. Felix is also an exceptional skier having started at age 6 with his training being 6 hours Saturday and another 6 hours on Sunday. As a skier Felix finished the season with 4 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze, medals. He also finished 4th out of the 10 races in the Nancy Greene category in the Laurentide division 7-8 olds. Felix is too young to box or compete, so his dad works with him regularly to prepare him for when he is of age. I will keep you posted on Felix's progress and debut in his amateur boxing career. National Championships: Prince George, BC. Apr. 01 - 03, 2005

Champs Eastside Boxing was in attendance in Prince George, BC , at the Cadet (under 16 years old) National Championship held April 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of 2005. Leading the way for team Ontario was Cornwall's own Joey Bowman (center), who was also named team captain. Joey stopped both fighters. The 1st bout was stopped at the end of the 1st round, as Joey had amassed a 15 point lead, to automatically warrant a stoppage. In his 2nd bout, and Gold Medal final Joey left no doubts. After giving his opponent 2 standing eight counts the referee had seen enough and finally stopped the bout in the 1st round. Champs Eastside Boxing wishes to congratulate Joey Bowman on becoming the first Cornwall Native to be Canadian Boxing Champion not once but twice.

Provincial Championships: Oshawa, ON. Mar. 04 - 06, 2005

Champs Eastside was in action Friday to Sunday, March 4th to 6th, 2005 in Oshawa, Ontario for the annual (14 to 16 year old) Provincial Championships. Representing Champs were Adam Villeneuve and Joey Bowman.

Adam 15 years old, 176 lbs. (80 kg) won the Cadet C Boys Novice (less than 10 bouts) division by walkover. Adam's opponent from Brampton, ON. never showed up, thus awarding Adam a title without a bout.

Joey Bowman, 2004 Canadian Light Flyweight Champ. Joey at 52 kg (114 lbs.) squared of against Michael Morby of Orangeville, ON. Joey showed both speed and power in his performance. After the second round Mike's corner man Brian Mackie (former Canadian Middleweight Champ in the Pro ranks) had seen enough and stopped the one sided bout. This was Joey's fifth Provincial title, earning him a berth at the Cadet National Championships in Prince George, BC in April.

National Canadian Junior Championships: Brantford, ON.
Feb. 17th - 20th, 2005

Out of Champs Eastside Boxing was Tony Luis, five time Ontario Boys Champion. Tony represented Ontario in the Junior Boys (16 to 18 year olds) Featherweight (57 kg / 125 lbs.) division. Tony's division was a talent laden one, featuring Tony and two-time Canadian Champ Sleman Usmanee of Alberta, Quebec Golden Glove Champ Sylvio Drolet, and three-time New Brunswick Golden Glove Champ Luc Angers.

Tony squared off with Sylvio Drolet of Quebec. In a very close technical bout, Tony dropped a tight decision by two points for a Bronze medal. This was Tony's third year at the National level. He's won Bronze twice, and Silver once. Sylvio Drolet advanced to the finals where he defeated Sleman Usmanee on points 35-28. Sylvio said Tony is the best opponent he's ever faced.

Open Ontario Provincial Championships: Dec. 10th - 12th, 2004

Representing Champs as Intermediates (16 to 18 years old) were Luke Chisholm, Mitchell Blais, and Tony Luis.

Luke Chisholm, 144 lbs., boxing in the Open (over 10 bouts) Welterweight division, lost a close, hard-fought bout to Justin Fountain of Hamilton, Ontario, over four rounds on a points decision. Luke boxed gallantly and the experience will make him better. Fountain won Silver.

Mitchell Blais, boxing at 138 lbs. in the Light Welterweight division, won a Silver medal, losing on a second round stoppage to Stuart Boyd of Hamilton, Ontario. It was only Mitchell's tenth bout, whereas Stuart Boyd has had over 60 bouts and was a Silver medallist at the Canada Winter Games.

Tony Luis, boxing at 125 lbs. (Featherweight), won Gold in his division, to win a fifth straight Ontario Championship in the Junior Men's Open division. Tony boxed twice and stopped both of his opponents on his way to Gold. In the first bout Tony squared off with Padriac Griffen of Orangeville, ON. Tony administered two eight counts and the bout was stopped. In the second bout Tony squared off with former rival Steve Marsh of Havelock, ON. Tony had previously beaten Steve three times before, but two bouts were close split decisions. The bout was stopped in the third round as Tony was beginning to overwhelm Steve. With this victory, Tony earned himself a berth to the National Championships in Feb. 2005 in Brantford, ON.

In attendance at the Championships was National coach, Gord Apolloni and Tony was given an invitation to represent Team Ontario on a trip to Italy next June, pending funding from Sports Ontario. This is the third time Tony has qualified for the Canadian National Championships.

Club Show Cornwall, ON. Nov. 27, 2004

Tony Luis of Champs Eastside Boxing Club in Cornwall, On. in the red corner, defeats Zisham Kahn of Brampton, On. in the blue corner in a good action packed three round technical fight. These two fighters fought well with good exchanges on both sides with Tony getting the best of the exchanges. Zisham fought well for a fighter with only 13 bouts under his belt.

Joey Bowman in the red corner of Champs Eastside Boxing Club in Cornwall, On. defeats Mikael Zewski of Cap de la Madelaine Boxing Club in Trois Rivieres, Qc. in a good action packed fight. Both fighters performed well and this fight could have gone either way.
