KERWIN TOURNAMENT
Ottawa’s Kerwin Boxing Club sent 4 fighters to
a local tournament on October 25/03, hosted by Gatineau’s Gladiator
Boxing Club, that included fighters from across Ontario and Western
Quebec.
-
David Ladd (75 kg) pounded his way
to a unanimous win over Gladiator’s Daniel Paquette in a 3-round
Novice fight. Simply outworking his opponent Ladd landed powerful
right hands throughout the match, building up a sizeable lead on points.
Paquette, in good shape, attempted to rally in the third and final
round but was unable to land enough punches to narrow the margin.
-
Hugh Maisonneuve (81 kg) entertained
the crowd in his fighting debut and came out strong in the first 2
rounds, outworking his opponent and landing a lot of good right hands.
The fast pace, however, ultimately led to his downfall as he simply
ran out of gas in the third and final frame. His opponent, Gladiator’s
Emmanuel Crevier, had no such problems and simply overwhelmed his
exhausted opponent en route to a third round stoppage.
- Rood Rene (75 kg) Voted “fight of the night”
this 4-round battle between Kerwin’s Roody Rene and Beaver Boxing’s
Kevin Van Den was something to see – what a fight! Rene came out
early catching Van Den with sharp left hooks and building up a sizeable
points lead over the first half of the fight. After staggering the former
provincial champ with an eight-count in the second round Rene continued
to out-box his opponent, as Van Den seemed to have trouble with his
elusive style. Going into the third Van Den, behind on points and with
a rapidly swelling right eye, knew he had to go to war if he wanted
a chance to win, and as a result began throwing big punches with bad
intentions and trying for a knockout. Rene, feeling the heat, responded
in kind and the second half of the fight was a real slug-fest. When
the smoke cleared an exhausted Rene still had his lead and pulled out
an easy points decision, but it was still a tough fight.
-
Jean-Pascal Service (91 kg) The
main event of the evening featured this former African National Champion
in a 4-round open class bout. A transplanted member of the Kerwin
Boxing Club, Jean-Pascal brings a lot of experience and some very
sharp punches to the ring. Competing against Montreal’s Chris
Purdi, he easily out-pointed his opponent en route to a decision victory.
Jean-Pascal plans on launching a pro career in the near future.
