Gabrielle
Mondiere (blue corner) of Gladiator Boxing (Gatineau, QC.) comes out
of the gate fast and aggressive with good hooks in the first round to
defeat Mike Atalla of Gale Kerwin Boxing (Ottawa, ON.), who had a good
second round, with good combinations and hooks. There were good exchanges
on both sides with Mike receiving a standing eight count. Although Gabrielle
won the war he did receive a bleeding nose courtesy of Mike. This was
the first bout of the evening and set the pace for an action filled
night.
Mitch
Blais (red corner) of Champs Boxing (Cornwall, ON) defeats Tim Smith
of Boxing Factory (Peterborough, ON.) in a fight with good exchanges
from both fighters with Tim getting the better of the exchanges at times.
Both fighters fought well ,and this fight could have gone either way.
Bryce
Douglas (red corner) of Gale Kerwin Boxing
(Ottawa, ON.) defeats J. Renaud also of the Gale Kerwin Club in a really
fast paced bout. Bryce came out of the corner like a man on fire never
letting up on Renaud. Bryce was to over-whelming for Renaud as it showed
with the referee stopping the bout in the first round.
Tony
Luis (blue corner) of Champs Boxing (Cornwall,
ON.) defeats David Bellmare of Gladiator Boxing (Gatineau, QC.) in a
good action fight. Tony came out of the corner on fire with some good
combinations and hard body shots in the first round. This is the best
I have seen Tony fight to date, up till the second and third round,
where Tony was loading up and missing most of his punches giving David
Ampel opportunity to get inside. As Tony got hook happy David took advantage
and kept getting inside and occasionally getting some punches in, but
not enough to change the outcome of the fight.
Ed
Cottrill of Gale Kerwin Boxing (Ottawa,
ON.) displays a well earned smile on his way to defeating Krishen Ranji
of the Beaver Boxing Club (Ottawa, ON.) by disqualification. At the
start of the first round Ed throws a jab and the rest is history. Ranji
decided that this was going to be an ULTIMATE FIGHT, as he literally
picked Ed up of the canvas and threw him through the ropes while trying
to punch him in the process. This was the worst display of amateur boxing
I have ever seen. Ranji belongs in a cage match, not a boxing gym.
Rock
Bosquet (red corner) of Gale Kerwin Boxing (Ottawa, ON.) defeats Fayer
Matar of Gladiator Boxing (Gatineau, QC.) a good action fight. Rock
was the more technical of the two with Fayer, having the shorter reach,
getting in ever so often. The third round proved to be the round with
all the action, and Fayer receiving two standing eight counts on his
way to a loss. Give Fayer credit for never backing down from an opponent
who looked twice his size.
Stephane
Joanisse (red corner) of Gale Kerwin Boxing (Ottawa, ON.) receives three
standing eight counts to have the fight stopped by the referee. Kevin
Van Den Detelaar of Beaver Boxing (Ottawa, ON.) has three good rounds
and stops Stephane in the third. This fight had good action but was
dominated by Kevin. Lets give Stephane credit for putting up a good
fight against an opponent with 42 bouts Vs Stephane's 18.

Manager: Rideau Carleton Raceway), and Ron Gervais. who runs the Gale
Kerwin Boxing Club in Ottawa, ON. I had the pleasure of talking with
Tim Stanley later in the evening. You can can always pick Tim out of
a crowd, as he sports a great big cheerful smile and walks with confidence.
I enjoyed meeting Tim and he does a great job. Keep smiling Tim!
I
caught up with the legendary Gaétan Hart (born in 1953, in Canada).
Gaetan is a former lightweight, and welterweight boxer from Buckingham,
Quebec. Gaetan was a three time Canadian boxing champion. He lost his
only world title fight against Aaron Pryor in 1980. Boxer Cleveland
Denny died 16 days after being knocked out by Hart in 1980. In 1992,
he was featured in a National Film Board of Canada documentary, (The
Steak). He now works out of the Gladiator Boxing Club in Gatineau, QC.
The first time I met Gaetan was at the Canada Vs Poland in Hull, QC.
Dec 13th, 2003. Gaetan! You are a gentleman, and you represent your
sport well.
I
met Jack and Keri Ireland in 2001 at a club show in Kingston, ON. When
you think of Belleville, ON. you can't help but think of the Belleville
Boxing Club which was born in 1985. Jack got involved in boxing because
his stepson was an amateur boxer. Since then Jack has developed into
a well respected amateur boxing coach, and a gentleman. He has trained
several Provincial Champions, as well as several National Champions,
Male & Female. Keri Ireland got involved with amateur boxing about
6 years ago as an official, and has been at it since, and may I say
"Doing a great job". Since then many shows later and a lot
of traveled miles with amateur boxers, Jack and Keri travel again but
not for competition. Jack's dad has taken ill and Jack and his wife
Keri will travel to the Barrie, ON. region to be with him indefinitely.
Jack! as my friend Jorge Luis says "You have left large shoes to
fill in Belleville & the Eastern Region". You will be missed
by all of us who have gotten to know you. We wish your family and your
dad well, and look forward to the day that you return. From all of your
friends at the Champs Eastside Boxing Club in Cornwall, ON. Be well
my friend...

Kerwin, a Canadian Boxing legend"
(Photo compliments of Kerwin Realties)
During his professional boxing career, from
1953 to 1962, Mr. Kerwin fought four world champions, and rose to
become the No. 10 contender in the welterweight division. He often
fought at Madison Square Gardens in New York and took Canada's welterweight
title in 1958. He is also a member of the Canadian Boxing Hall of
Fame. Mr. Kerwin is considered to be the best boxer to ever come
out of Ottawa, having fought four times for the lightweight & welterweight
championship of the world. Gale Kerwin, Pinky Mitchel & Eddie
Senos were the original founders of the Beaver Boxing Club in Ottawa,
ON. They later started the Gale Kerwin Boxing Club in Ottawa, ON.
in 1994, which, thanks to Ron Gervais, still carries on till this
day in Mr. Kerwin's memory.
Mr. Kerwin passed away September 19th, 2001;
due to heart complications after receiving a heart transplant at
the age of 66. He will be missed by his family and friends. Shawn
Kerwin has the same work ethics instilled, and will continue with
the family Real Estate business. www.kerwinrealties.com
