Jorge Luis in the early years.

(The article on the left sums it all up.)

"The dedication and hard work in training."

Today! Jorge Luis continues the dedication and hard work, not in the ring, but as the founder, head coach, and trainer at Champs Eastside Boxing Club in (Cornwall, Ontario)

Jorge finds the time from his busy schedule on a Saturday afternoon to take his young fighters for a three mile run, and a well deserved swim.

Jorge knows and understands all too well the value of conditioning in boxing.

Jorge Luis with Montreal's Russ Anber

Through time, Jorge Luis has gained the respect he deserves as a great coach and humble human being. This is evident in this picture, as he was asked to work the corner with one of Canada's premier coaches and boxing analyst of TSN's In This Corner with Russ Anber.

Jorge Luis is seen here rewarding his athletes, Matt Veenstra and Luc Chisholm, for their hard work and dedication. Jorge believes in the philosophy that those who work hard and make the necessary sacrifices to be successful should reap the rewards as well.

Jorge Luis began boxing in his early teens as an amateur fighter. He fought and beat boxers who went on to compete at the provincial and national level. At the age of nineteen, Jorge suffered a severe ankle injury which ended his amateur boxing career. However, his passion for the sport never died, and twenty years later, Jorge is giving back. By founding Champs Eastside Boxing Club in Cornwall, Ont., Jorge gives generously of his time in offering youth the opportunities he never had. His continued dedication, and persistence in the sport, has, to his credit, produced:

  • One two time Canadian Champion (Joe Bowman)
  • One five time Ontario Champion (Joe Bowman)
  • One six time Ontario Champion (Tony Luis)
  • Two Novice Ontario Champions (Luc Chisholm, Matt Veenstra)

All of these accomplishments in a span of five years

I would like to thank Tony Luis for sharing his thoughts with me.

To my friend Jorge Luis who has been an inspiration in my life, and a dear friend. The world needs more like you. Thank you!
