Tony
Luis of Champs Eastside Boxing Club in Cornwall, On. in the red shirt
goes head to head with Frederic Simard of Gramby, Qc. in what was scheduled
for a 4 rounder, and turned into a three round due to the officials
having a change of heart. Frederic came out of his corner swinging only
to be answered back by Tony. They went toe to toe in the first round,
then became a little more technical by the second. Frederic is a good
boxer and probably Tony's best fight to date. By the third round Tony
had picked up the pace and was landing more and putting it together.
Frederic wins the fight by a judges split decision. Tony was upset,
not at the decision, but at the fact that he had prepared himself physically,
emotionally, and mentally for a four round bout. I can't remember the
last time I saw Tony fight this well. This kid has definitely grown
up. When I spoke to Jorge Luis after the fight he said " I don't
mind the loss, as we came here to fight a kid who is two years Tony'
s age, happens to be the Canadian Champion, and is leaving for Poland
with the Canadian Boxing Team. This was a great fight, and I believe
that Tony will come back from the Nationals a Canadian Champion in May".
I seem to agree with Jorge, but then again we are not the judges. Good
luck Frederic in Poland. You are a good kid and a good boxer. You deserve
to be on Team Canada.
Matt
(Maddog) Veenstra of Champs Eastside Boxing Club in Cornwall, On defeats
Alexandre Coulombe of Apprenti Champion in Qc. The first round started
with Alexandre coming out of his corner fighting and establishing control.
Matt had not yet faced faced a south-paw and had to adjust. By the second
round Jorge Luis had sent Matt on the right path as he adjusted well.
It didn't take long for Matt to establish the hook, and left hook he
did. Matt threw a right hook to the body of Alexandre who blocked it
, but never saw the left hand coming. It happened so fast, I think everyone
was taken by surprise. By the way Alexandre got up it was obvious the
fight would be stopped, and stopped it was. This fight had all the indications
of being a great fight and all out battle.
Ivlev
Eugeniy of Tri-Star finds Rody Lamothe of St-Hyacinthe, Qc. with a well
placed left. This was a good action fight with Ivlev being the aggressor
and taking home the victory. The referee stepped in quite often with
each fighter receiving eight counts.
Marc
Andre Gaucher of Longueuil, Qc. defeats Karl Vaillancourt of St-Hyacinthe,
Qc. in what looked like a tree versus a plant. Marc was the more aggressive
puncher, but lets give Karl credit for being tough, having a good jab,
and covering up well. The funniest moment came when Karl was pushed
back hard into the ropes and came flying back to the center of the ring
like a wrestler with a punch behind it.
Mathieu
Tremblay of Longueuil, Qc. defeats Alexandre Auger of St-Jerome, Qc.
This was a good action fight with Alexandre being very aggressive and
taking control of the fight early. Mathieu came back, fought a good
fight, and took home the victory.
Mario
Crispo of Club Champion in Montreal, Qc. in an Exhibition fight with
Adrian Sanchez of Laval, Qc. Mario is a good combination puncher and
a very aggressive fighter. Adrian looked a little smaller than Mario
but put up a good fight. Mario wasted no time in going after his ring
mate and reminded me of a young Tony Luis when he was Mario's age. These
two guy's put on a great show.
Rene
Rivet of Club Champion in Montreal, Qc. stops Louis Philippe Gagne of
Longueuil, Qc. with the referee stopping the fight in the third round
after Louis received 2 standing eight counts. Rene had good combinations,
with good movement, and was the hard puncher. Louis jabbed more using
a straight up jab, and got better in the third round.
Louis
Gilles Marie of Gramby, Qc. defeats Philippe Bianchi of St-Jerome, Qc.
Philippe seemed to be the harder puncher and the aggressor in a good
action packed fight. Louis started fighting back in the later rounds
to take the win.
Melanie
Bray of St-Jerome, Qc. in the red corner in an Exhibition fight with
Martin Vallero of Mascouche, Qc. These two girls put on a good competitive
show. Both fighters were aggressive with Melanie landing the harder
punches. All in all this was a great fight.
Eric
Desjardins of Mario Cusson in an Exhibition fight with Maxime Neault
of Sherbrooke, Qc. Eric in the red corner threw solid punches and worked
the body well. Maxime receiving an eight count, had a good and effective
jab and picked up the pace in the later rounds to turn this into a good
fight.
Max
Geller of Tri-Star in the blue shirt defeats Dominic Hamel of Longueuil,
Qc. This fight got off to a fast start with good action. Max fought
well and was the aggressor, with Dominic coming back to fight an aggressive
fight.
Steeve
Tremblay of Longueuil, Qc defeats Albert Christine of Ron Dicecco. Albert
was edging Steeve on and fighting aggressively. Although, Albert had
a good third round Steeve showed good technical, good hooks, and seemed
to be punching at will. This still made a great action fight as Albert
was not about to give up and remained in the battle till the end.
Dave
Regimbald of Longueuil, Qc. in the red shirt defeats Samuel Vincent
of Apprenti Champion in a great action, and free for all fight. Dave
came out of his corner with a fast and aggressive start, throwing lots
of punches. Samuel put together good combinations and was tough kid
in the ring. These two fighters put on a great show with lots of action.
Christian
Ouellet of Mario Cusson in the red shirt defeats Gabriel Beausoleil
of Academie Boxe Laval in a good action bout. Christian is a good quick
puncher, put together good combinations, and technical fighting abilities.
Gabriel received a standing eight count, but to his credit fought hard
and provided the crowd with a good action fight.
Louis
Boujol of Club Champion in Montreal, Qc. in an Exhibition fight with
Varil Gagne of Mainville. This was a good technical fight, with good
combinations being thrown by both fighters.
Matt
Veenstra's family show up to support this young fighter who is rapidly
making a name for himself. On the far right is Matt's dad who is always
coming out to help us with our club shows, setting up the ring, and
anything else that we may need. Thanks Bo we always appreciate your
support and help. Second from the left is Matt's Grandfather, with other
family members. Thanks for showing up and supporting such a great sport
and all of the young boxers that work hard to make this a great sport.

Champion with Jorge Luis in his corner looking on.
Camile
Callender as he announces the nights bouts. Camile is fifty years old
and a former Kick boxing instructor. At forty Camile felt he needed
a change and got involved in boxing where he became an instructor, and
we are glad he did. Good work Camile!
Matt
Veenstra and Tony Luis getting ready for their bouts. This is one of
those priceless moments where I catch Tony with his pants down.

Paul Evans (Mario's trainer)
and Mario Crispo take a time out to chat with me right after Mario's
fight. Paul and I have met before on a few occasions, and I always enjoy
talking with him. When you meet Paul you can't help but like this man.
Mario was telling me how his brother Vincent had come to fight, but
his bout was cancelled because his opponent was a no show. He then asked
me if I would take a photo of him with his brother Vincent, I agreed!

Vincent Crispo on the left with
his brother Mario just as I promised. Sorry I did not get to see you
fight Vincent, but I am sure I will get that chance in the near future..

Left to right: Jorge Luis (President)

A special thanks to Stephane Vallee for making us feel at home and assisting
me in making the coverage of his event possible.
