Luis Cruises to Easy Decision Victory

Cornwall Ontario native and current Quebec Lightweight champion Tony “The Lightning” Luis, 10-0, 3KO’s dominated Mexican Adrian Verdugo, now 12-2-1, 9KO’s over eight rounds by scores of 80-72, 79-73 and 78-74.

Luis dominated every round in the right and was never in any trouble.  He looked physically stronger, controlled the pace and out boxed Verdugo.  Verdugo tried to switch to southpaw in the first round but it was ineffective.  Near the end of the opening round Luis forced Verdugo to the ropes where he landed two hard left hooks; the second hook froze Verdugo in his tracks at the bell.  “Lightning” Luis used brilliant lateral movement and mixed up his combinations well to the head and body of Verdugo cruising to an easy eight round decision victory.

Pascal Earns Technical Decison over Dawson

Reigning WBC Light Heavyweight champion Jean Pascal, 26-1, 16KO’s retained his title tonight at the Bell Centre in Montreal by winning an 11th round technical decision over “Bad” Chad Dawson 29-1, 17KO’s for the vacant Ring Magazine championship.  The fight was stopped in the 11th round when Dawson suffered a severe cut over his right eye due to an accidental clash of heads.  Jack Woodburn scored the fight 108-101 and Gerald Ritter & John Kean scored it 106-103.  With the win Pascal also claimed Dawson’s IBO Light Heavyweight championship.  Dawson and Pascal are universally recognized as the number one and two Light Heavyweights in the world.

Pascal started the fight very aggressively landing hard jabs and good right hands to the body which kept Dawson backing up and off balance throughout most of the round.  In the third round Pascal was able to split Dawson’s guard with hard right hands.  The southpaw Dawson was landing his jab well and keeping pace with Pascal however it was Pascal who was landing the visibly harder punches.

In the fourth round Dawson chased Pascal around the ring and used his jab effectively and working good combinations to the head and body of Pascal.  However Pascal came on strong near the end of the round pinning Dawson on the ropes with a hard flurry of left hooks to the body and flush right hands to the face.  Dawson came out in the same aggressive fashion in the fifth round moving Pascal back and started to up his punch output.  Pascal was able to fend off most of the onslaught with his excellent lateral movement and defence.

Rounds seven through ten were Pascal’s best rounds in the fight.  Pascal hurt Dawson with a clean right hand to the chin that forced him to the ropes where Pascal followed up with a second right hand to the chin that buckled Dawson’s knees.  In the eighth round Pascal had Dawson hurt again with the right hand.  Dawson was holding on for dear life but Pascal tried his very best to pound away on Dawson to avoid the clinch.  In the opening seconds of the ninth round Pascal stunned Dawson again forcing him back to the ropes where he ducked and slipped trying to survive Pascal’s flurries.  By the tenth round Dawson looked confused and tired as Pascal dug hard hooks to the body trying to end the fight.

A desperate Dawson came out in the 11th round knowing he needed a knockout to win and he almost got it.  Dawson had Pascal hurt from the opening seconds of the round.  Pascal covered up on the ropes as Dawson pounded away on him.  It took every bit of effort for Pascal to stay on his feet.  Mid way through the round Dawson caught Pascal with a huge counter left uppercut that hurt Pascal and forced him back to the ropes.  Moments later as Dawson was looking to finish Pascal off Pascal lifted his head upwards as Dawson was ducking down and their heads collided opening a large, deep cut over Dawson’s left eye that saw blood pour down into it.  Pascal received a minor cut on the top of his forehead.  The action was called to a halt as referee Michael Griffin called Dawson over to the ring doctor and upon inspection of the cut the bout was called to an immediate halt.  This very well may have saved Pascal as Dawson looked to be coming on strong in the championship rounds.  The rules state that if a fight is stopped due to a cut the round is scored and it goes to the judge’s scorecards where Pascal won an 108-101, 106-103 & 106-103 unanimous technical decision.

Dawson stated immediately after the fight that there was a rematch clause in the contract however Pascal is allowed to have one voluntary defence before honouring the contract.  However HBO seemed very interested in a superfight between champions Lucien Bute and Jean Pascal.

Jean Dominates Soriano

Quebec Super Welterweight champion Dierry Jean remains undefeated at 18-0, 12KO’s as he stopped Mexican Antonio Soriano, now 15-12-2, 10KO’s.  Soriano did not answer the bell for the seventh round.

Jean completely outclassed Soriano throughout the fight by controlling the tempo and ring.  Dierry used his lateral movement effectively slipping to his right after landing stiff left jabs and hard right hands.  The hard rights caused swelling under Soriano’s left eye from the second round on.

In the fourth it looked as though Soriano had nothing left on his punches and was having a difficult time stopping Jean’s right hand.  Near the end of the round Jean hurt Soriano with a right left right combination to the head.  In the sixth Jean sat down on his punches more often and rocked Soriano throughout the round.  Soriano looked dazed at the bell and retired on his stool not answering the bell for the seventh round. Lavallee Remains Perfect

Montreal Junior Lightweight Kevin Lavallee remains undefeated at 2-0, 2KO’s as he destroyed Mexican Genaro Garcia, 9-9, 6KO’s at 1:16 of the opening round.  Lavallee came out like lightening and hurt Garcia with a right hand early and he followed it up with a series of lefts and rights that dropped Garcia within the first minute of the round.  Garcia beat the count but Lavallee pounced right on him landing a left hook the body followed up by a right hand and left hook to the head that dropped Garcia on his back forcing referee Marlon B. Wright to call a halt to the fight at 1:16 of the first round.

Rivera Upsets John

Montreal native Wayne John, now 4-1, 2KO’s suffered his first defeat at the hands of Puerto Rican Ruben Rivera 3-4, 1KO by a 57-56, 57-56 Rivera and 59-55 John split decision in a hard fought six round Heavyweight contest.

In the opening round it was a technical affair that saw the southpaw Rivera continually move forward and apply pressure on John.  John would counter and move laterally around the perimeter of the ring.  In the last twenty seconds Rivera caught John with a crisp right uppercut and left hook dropping him to the canvass.

The second round was more of the same as John controlled the first half of the round by landing hard left hooks however mid way through John took a hard right hand left hook combination that stunned him.  Rivera tried to establish his jab near the end of the round.

Early in the third round John tried to establish his jab to Rivera’s body trying to find range to land the right hand over the top.  Also Rivera would occasionally switch to an orthodox stance and try to confuse and pot shot John.  Rivera put an exclamation mark at the end of the round with a hard left hook to John’s head.

In the fourth and fifth rounds John threw significantly more punches than Rivera and out boxed him however John did not want to commit to hard punches because he would get caught by hard counter punches by Rivera.

Mid way through the sixth round Rivera started to yell and taunt John trying to entice him into a brawl but to John’s credit he stayed composed and did not get drawn in.  Rivera was warned by referee Alain Villeneuve to stop taunting.  From round four on Rivera was definitely looking to land a one punch knockout.

Usmanee Knocks out Pacheco

Red Deer, Alberta Lightweight Arash Usmanee, 6-0, 3KO’s) started off the event with an impressive knockout over veteran Mexican Hugo Pacheco, 11-16-1, 9KO’s at 1:28 of the second round

The first half of the opening round was a seesaw affair with both fighters looking for openings.  About half way through Pacheco caught Usmanee with a solid right left combination however Usmanee came right back landing a left hook that dropped Pacheco near the end of the round.

In the second round Pacheco caught Usmanee with a hard left to the body but Usmanee countered with a hard right hand that snapped Pacheco’s head back and dropped him to the canvass.  Pacheco got up by the count of eight but was forced back to the ropes by Usmanee’s right hand that continually penetrated the Mexican’s defence.  Usmanee followed up with another flurry completed with a right hand that dropped Pacheco in to the corner and forced Marlon B. Wright to call a halt to the action at 1:28 of the second round.

Tony Luis proves he can bang
by Luis De Melo

Tony "Lightning" Luis after two cancelled fights due to no shows finally gets back in the saddle to face Adrien Valdez 19-8-3 with 11Ko’s at the Stade Uniprix (Jarry Park). Tony came into this fight at 8-0 with 2Ko’s to face an opponent who has gone the distance with Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero for 12 rounds before Guerrero won the world title at Junior Lightweight. Valdez also went the distance for a 10 rounder with Bernard Dunne losing a split decision in the featherweight division. Valdez also owns a decision against Cesar Soto a world champion in the featherweight division.

The opening round saw Tony Luis feeling out Valdez and trying to adjust to a ring savvy boxer.  Valdez was not about to make this fight an easy one for a faster Luis. The opening round saw Luis landing a sold blow to the body of Valdez and from that point on the Mexican fighter was not going to have more of that, and that’s when the holding, dropping his body down to Luis’ waist started to frustrate Luis. Luis would finally start to unravel the puzzle and would start to put his punches together and there they would find their mark. Luis would constantly stalk his opponent at every turn putting pressure and trying to open Valdez up for some combinations’. A solid right to the body and a short left hook to the chin of Valdez would seal his fate in the 5th round at 1:16. Valdez would wither the storm and beat the count, but not react to the referee’s instructions to advance and there the fight would be called a KO in favour of Luis. Tony Luis’ record improves to 9-0-0 3Ko’s

David Lemieux sends Elvin Ayala packing
by Luis De Melo

It did not take David Lemieux long to dispatch former IBF Middleweight title challenger Elvin Ayala. David landed a vicious straight right hand that sent Ayala’s head back. A left hook followed by a solid right hook would send Ayala to the canvas. He would pick himself up but not fully recover. Lemieux would drill Ayala with a short right hook that would send him into the ropes and back down for an 8 count. The fight would continue with a flurry of punches sending Ayala back down for the third knockdown thus ending the fight at 2:44 of the first round. David Lemieux improves his record 23-0 with 22KO’s and is the new WBC International Middleweight Champion.

Brian Vera stops Sabastien Demers
by Luis De Melo

Demers started well utilizing his jab and combinations. As the rounds progressed Vera would send Demers to the canvas in the third round with a left right combination. From what I could see, Demers was badly cut over what appeared to be his nose. Demers would get up of the canvas but seemed to stagger with his legs buckling.  Vera would again pounce on Demers and drop him again for the count, and again Demers would manage to pick himself up staggering again but not for long as Vera was all over him when the referee decided he had seen enough. The fight would be stopped at 1:57 of the 3rd round.

Kevin Bizier dominates Jhonny Navarrete
by Luis De Melo

Kevin Bizier was off to a good start landing sharp crisp punches at will and blocking the efforts of his opponent to deliver any. Bizier was working hard every round and at one point backing Navarrete into a corner throwing a flurry of punches and hurting him. In the 5th round it would prove to be no different. The start of the sixth would see Bizier throwing three straight right hands, good hooks that were finding their mark followed by body shots. The seventh round saw Navarrete hitting the canvas and receiving an eight count, but saved by the bell. That would be it for Navarrete as his corner decided they had seen enough. Kevin Bizier earns a KO in the seventh round at 3:00.

Wayne John

Wayne John proves too much for L'Heureux
by Luis De Melo

It was an even start for both fighters with Patrice utilizing good jabs and Wayne delivering good blows to the body, then back to the head. Patrice returns the favour, but Wayne gets the better of the exchanges. Wayne starts to quicken the pace with good body shots and quick jabs to the body and back to the head. It was a steady fight with Wayne being the lighter and busier boxer offering up good solid punches that would stun Patrice in the third round. Patrice would find himself on the ropes being overwhelmed by solid punches. In the fifth round Wayne John would get the job done by hammering Patrice into the ropes again and delivering more punches to the head and body that would stun his opponent and there the fight would be stopped at 2:22 of the fifth round to earn Wayne John his second KO for a record of 4-0- 2KO's.

My first encounter with Wayne John the amateur boxer

I had not seen Wayne John since 2003 in Oka QC. at an amateur show. I remember it like it was yesterday. Dave Hilton Senior had brought a small young fighter by the name of Elvis Shegar, and it was his first fight. Along with Mr. Hilton was Wayne John. I remember Jorge Luis mentioning to me after we were introduced to Wayne by Mr. Hilton that he was a good boxer. I had the chance to see him in his fourth fight as a pro at the Stade Uniprix. After the fight I had the opportunity to chat with Wayne. I asked him if he remembered me, and he looked at me with confusion. I mentioned 2003 in Oka, Davy Hilton Senior, Elvis Shegar, and that we were from Cornwall, ON. with Tony Luis fighting in Oka as a young amateur and he immediately remembered seven years later. You had a great performance Wayne and I enjoyed watching you fight and winning.

Manolis

Rocky start for Manolis
by Luis De Melo

Manolis Plaitis came out swinging in the first round getting the better of Chavez. Then came the second round and that would change. Chavez threw a solid overhand right that would catch Plaitis square on the chin that would drop him solidly to the canvas. He would manage to raise himself from the canvas and beat the count to 9, but had absolutely no idea what truck had just hit him. The referee would end the contest as Plaitis obviously had no idea what just happened and could not continue 55 seconds into the second round.

Kevin Lavallee

Great debut for Kevin Lavallee
by Luis De Melo

Out of the corner jabbing and putting punches together with good speed would be Kevin Lavallee dominating and punishing Carlos Martinez. It would be at 2:26 of the first round that Lavallee would dispatch Martinez to the canvas with a solid right hook, and there he would take the full ten count. It was a great night for Kevin Lavallee and his nervous father Big John whom I had told earlier "Kevin will beat this guy, I know it". Kevin had come to Cornwall with Jessie and Jimmy Thompson to spar with Tony Luis in preparation for the fight with Carlos Martinez seeing how Tony had just fought him earlier

I am no stranger to Kevin Lavallee and his family. We have been to many amateur shows where Tony, Jessie, and Kevin would fight at. Kevin has continued to train and excel at what he enjoys most, and told me how he was looking forward to turning pro. Well Kevin had his moment in Montreal and showed us that he belongs here. I am proud of you Kevin, and I wish you continued success on your journey in the pro ranks.

I caught up with Dierry Jean at the Stade Uniprix at the ESPN Fight Night. I had not seen Dierry for quite some time due to an injury he sustained on his right arm. It was good to see him in good spirits. He told me he should be back fighting on August 14, 2010 at the Bell Center. Good luck Jean.

Decarie

I ran into Antonin at the Stade Uniprix looking as classy as usual. I think he should be on one of the top ten list of best dressed boxers. Antonin is looking towards August or September for a rematch with M'baye. Good luck Antonin! I am looking forward to that one.
