At the Pierre Carbonneau Centre in Montreal, Quebec with what one might think was taking place in Cornwall, ON due to a majority of faithful Cornwall fans on hand to support their native son. Tony Luis would not disappoint them by capturing the WBC Continental Americas Light Welterweight title with a KO in the first round, thus making a statement that he is one of the best Lightweights in the country. The knockout came at the 3 minute mark of the first round. Alejandro Barrera started the fight with jabs followed by solid right hands. From the opening round It would appear to boxing fans that this would prove to be a tough fight for Luis. Once Luis felt Barrera's right hand a couple of times and shook it off without a second thought, it would be the turning point of the fight. Luis went into high gear and dropped Barrera with a solid left hook to the body. Barrera would beat the count, but not for long. Once the fight resumed a second body shot would drop him to his knees where I could see him wincing from the pain and shaking his head no more several times as he took the full 10 count to end the fight. Tony Luis moves to 13-0, 5KO's. When asked who he would like to fight next, Tony would only say "Whoever my manager puts in front of me". In Tony's final statement he would scream out "Thank you Cornwall, ON for your support".
On the UGC promoted undercard, Ali Nestor Charles 12-5-2, 4KO'S would outbox Baldimir Hernandez 18-7-16KO'S in earning himself an 8 round unanimous decision. 79-73, 79-73, and 78-74 in favor of the Ali Nestor.
Lightweight Roody Pierre-Paul 4-0, 3KO'S scored a unanimous 6 round decision over Mexico's Isaac Bejarano who drops to 9-11-1, 7KO'S

Tony Luis proves he can bang

Tony "Lightning" Luis after two cancelled fights due to no shows finally gets back in the saddle to face Adrien Valdez 19-8-3 with 11Ko’s at the Stade Uniprix (Jarry Park). Tony came into this fight at 8-0 with 2Ko’s to face an opponent who has gone the distance with Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero for 12 rounds before Guerrero won the world title at Junior Lightweight. Valdez also went the distance for a 10 rounder with Bernard Dunne losing a split decision in the featherweight division. Valdez also owns a decision against Cesar Soto a world champion in the featherweight division.
The opening round saw Tony Luis feeling out Valdez and trying to adjust to a ring savvy boxer. Valdez was not about to make this fight an easy one for a faster Luis. The opening round saw Luis landing a sold blow to the body of Valdez and from that point on the Mexican fighter was not going to have more of that, and that’s when the holding, dropping his body down to Luis’ waist started to frustrate Luis. Luis would finally start to unravel the puzzle and would start to put his punches together and there they would find their mark. Luis would constantly stalk his opponent at every turn putting pressure and trying to open Valdez up for some combinations’. A solid right to the body and a short left hook to the chin of Valdez would seal his fate in the 5th round at 1:16. Valdez would wither the storm and beat the count, but not react to the referee’s instructions to advance and there the fight would be called a KO in favour of Luis. Tony Luis’ record improves to 9-0-0 3Ko’s

David Lemieux sends Elvin Ayala packing
by Luis De Melo
It did not take David Lemieux long to dispatch former IBF Middleweight title challenger Elvin Ayala. David landed a vicious straight right hand that sent Ayala’s head back. A left hook followed by a solid right hook would send Ayala to the canvas. He would pick himself up but not fully recover. Lemieux would drill Ayala with a short right hook that would send him into the ropes and back down for an 8 count. The fight would continue with a flurry of punches sending Ayala back down for the third knockdown thus ending the fight at 2:44 of the first round. David Lemieux improves his record 23-0 with 22KO’s and is the new WBC International Middleweight Champion.

Brian Vera stops Sabastien Demers
by Luis De Melo
Demers started well utilizing his jab and combinations. As the rounds progressed Vera would send Demers to the canvas in the third round with a left right combination. From what I could see, Demers was badly cut over what appeared to be his nose. Demers would get up of the canvas but seemed to stagger with his legs buckling. Vera would again pounce on Demers and drop him again for the count, and again Demers would manage to pick himself up staggering again but not for long as Vera was all over him when the referee decided he had seen enough. The fight would be stopped at 1:57 of the 3rd round.

Kevin Bizier vs Jhonny Navarrete

Kevin Bizier dominates Jhonny Navarrete
by Luis De Melo
Kevin Bizier was off to a good start landing sharp crisp punches at will and blocking the efforts of his opponent to deliver any. Bizier was working hard every round and at one point backing Navarrete into a corner throwing a flurry of punches and hurting him. In the 5th round it would prove to be no different. The start of the sixth would see Bizier throwing three straight right hands, good hooks that were finding their mark followed by body shots. The seventh round saw Navarrete hitting the canvas and receiving an eight count, but saved by the bell. That would be it for Navarrete as his corner decided they had seen enough. Kevin Bizier earns a KO in the seventh round at 3:00.

Wayne John vs Patrice L'Heureux

Wayne John proves too much for L'Heureux
by Luis De Melo
It was an even start for both fighters with Patrice utilizing good jabs and Wayne delivering good blows to the body, then back to the head. Patrice returns the favour, but Wayne gets the better of the exchanges. Wayne starts to quicken the pace with good body shots and quick jabs to the body and back to the head. It was a steady fight with Wayne being the lighter and busier boxer offering up good solid punches that would stun Patrice in the third round. Patrice would find himself on the ropes being overwhelmed by solid punches. In the fifth round Wayne John would get the job done by hammering Patrice into the ropes again and delivering more punches to the head and body that would stun his opponent and there the fight would be stopped at 2:22 of the fifth round to earn Wayne John his second KO for a record of 4-0- 2KO's.

My first encounter with Wayne John the amateur boxer
I had not seen Wayne John since 2003 in Oka QC. at an amateur show. I remember it like it was yesterday. Dave Hilton Senior had brought a small young fighter by the name of Elvis Shegar, and it was his first fight. Along with Mr. Hilton was Wayne John. I remember Jorge Luis mentioning to me after we were introduced to Wayne by Mr. Hilton that he was a good boxer. I had the chance to see him in his fourth fight as a pro at the Stade Uniprix. After the fight I had the opportunity to chat with Wayne. I asked him if he remembered me, and he looked at me with confusion. I mentioned 2003 in Oka, Davy Hilton Senior, Elvis Shegar, and that we were from Cornwall, ON. with Tony Luis fighting in Oka as a young amateur and he immediately remembered seven years later. You had a great performance Wayne and I enjoyed watching you fight and winning.

Manolis Plaitis vs Alfredo Chavez

Rocky start for Manolis
by Luis De Melo
Manolis Plaitis came out swinging in the first round getting the better of Chavez. Then came the second round and that would change. Chavez threw a solid overhand right that would catch Plaitis square on the chin that would drop him solidly to the canvas. He would manage to raise himself from the canvas and beat the count to 9, but had absolutely no idea what truck had just hit him. The referee would end the contest as Plaitis obviously had no idea what just happened and could not continue 55 seconds into the second round.

Kevin Lavallee vs Carlos Martinez

Great debut for Kevin Lavallee
by Luis De Melo
Out of the corner jabbing and putting punches together with good speed would be Kevin Lavallee dominating and punishing Carlos Martinez. It would be at 2:26 of the first round that Lavallee would dispatch Martinez to the canvas with a solid right hook, and there he would take the full ten count. It was a great night for Kevin Lavallee and his nervous father Big John whom I had told earlier "Kevin will beat this guy, I know it". Kevin had come to Cornwall with Jessie and Jimmy Thompson to spar with Tony Luis in preparation for the fight with Carlos Martinez seeing how Tony had just fought him earlier

I am no stranger to Kevin Lavallee and his family. We have been to many amateur shows where Tony, Jessie, and Kevin would fight at. Kevin has continued to train and excel at what he enjoys most, and told me how he was looking forward to turning pro. Well Kevin had his moment in Montreal and showed us that he belongs here. I am proud of you Kevin, and I wish you continued success on your journey in the pro ranks.

I caught up with Dierry Jean at the Stade Uniprix at the ESPN Fight Night. I had not seen Dierry for quite some time due to an injury he sustained on his right arm. It was good to see him in good spirits. He told me he should be back fighting on August 14, 2010 at the Bell Center. Good luck Jean.

Antonin Decarie with Carlos De Melo

I ran into Antonin at the Stade Uniprix looking as classy as usual. I think he should be on one of the top ten list of best dressed boxers. Antonin is looking towards August or September for a rematch with M'baye. Good luck Antonin! I am looking forward to that one.
